LONGEVITY BEAT

Are you familiar with the six pillars of lifestyle medicine? Lifestyle medicine is a whole-system approach to preventing and reversing chronic and lifestyle-related diseases, with a focus on behavior, social and environmental factors.

The six pillars are physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress, social connections and avoiding harmful substances.

Having been young when smoking may have been considered cool, it’s the first that comes to mind for the latter pillar. However, the issue of 'harmful substances' is more nuanced than it may seem at first glance. As a reader of our newsletter, we assume you are likely a non-smoker and already avoid harmful drugs.

But are you aware of the toxins present in your daily products? From food to cosmetics to cleaning supplies, we come into contact with harmful substances every day.

For instance, let's consider personal care products. Depending on your location, there may be few to no regulations on the ingredients manufacturers can use to enhance the scent, texture, or shelf life of their products.

In the EU, the cosmetics industry is regulated by the EU Cosmetics Regulation, which is relatively strict. Manufacturers must conduct safety assessments and disclose all ingredients. In contrast, the United States takes a more lenient approach. The FDA oversees cosmetics, but its power is limited to post-market regulation. The entire system relies heavily on voluntary industry compliance.

As a consequence, a variety of substances are banned in the EU but remain unregulated in the US. Let's look at a few examples:

Parabens (e.g., Methylparaben, Propylparaben)

Function: Preservative (expands product shelf life)
Found in: Moisturizers, shampoos, sunscreens
Harmful Mechanisms: Parabens mimic estrogen, disrupting hormonal balance and possibly contributing to reproductive issues and breast cancer
EU: Some parabens are banned, others strictly regulated
U.S.: No specific bans, but consumer pressure has led to reduced use

Phthalates (e.g., DBP, DEHP)

Function: Increase flexibility in plastics and act as solvents
Found in: Nail polishes, hair sprays, perfumes
Harmful Mechanisms: Phthalates can interfere with hormone production, particularly testosterone, leading to reproductive and developmental issues
EU: Banned in cosmetics
U.S.: Some restrictions, particularly in children's products, but not broadly banned in cosmetics

Siloxanes (e.g., D4, D5, D6)

Function: Silky texture
Found in: Hair products, deodorants, facial lotions
Harmful Mechanisms: Suspected endocrine disruptors and may impair human fertility. Harmful to the environment, especially in aquatic environments.
EU: Restrictions in place, especially for wash-off products
U.S.: No specific restrictions

Aluminum Compounds (Aluminum Chlorohydrate)

Function: Block sweat ducts
Found in: Antiperspirants
Harmful Mechanisms: Potential links to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease
EU: Restricted (concentration limits)
U.S.: Still recognized as safe but under scrutiny due to health concerns

What you can do

Knowledge is a powerful tool. Understanding the role of toxins in everyday products can help you make healthier choices.

Consider using apps or databases to analyze ingredients (see this issue’s recommended products for more info).

If you are in the EU, take advantage of the stricter regulations. Read labels carefully and use tools like the mentioned apps to understand them. When possible, opt for products with fewer ingredients and more natural components.

In the United States, where regulations may be less strict, it’s important to be aware and proactive. Choose products from companies that voluntarily adhere to stricter standards and list all ingredients.

Given the vast number of potential toxins hidden in your consumer products, we suggest you get a PhD in chemistry to memorize them all.

If you don’t have the time we recommend the following tools to shed some light:

Codecheck

What it is: A mobile app for scanning product barcodes while shopping (you can also search for products by name). The app provides product ratings (green/red circles) based on ingredients. You can also see "alternative" products with better ratings.

Scope: 2 million global products and 14,000 chemical ingredients (claim)

Price: Freemium (€2/month or €12/year)

Available: English & German mobile app

What we like: The service has been around since 2002, so the database is very extensive. The interface of the app is also easy to use. You get a quick overview of potentially harmful ingredients.

What we don’t like: You have to sign up for the paid version almost immediately when you try to check the details for your first product. Also, Codecheck's business model is based on ads for "alternative" products that appear below the scanned product. Miraculously, these products tend to have a "green" rating. Conflict of interest?

INCIDecoder

What it is: INCI stands for "International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients" to ensure that manufacturers use the same specific name for a given ingredient. INCIDecoder is a consumer-friendly database of products and their ingredients to help you understand how they work and why they're included.

Scope: Not disclosed

Price: Free

Available: Online in English

What we like: It's very easy to use and offers a great level of ingredient detail and background information. It provides scientific evidence.

What we don’t like: The information provided is so dense and technical that it's not easy to get a quick overview. Little hack if you're on a product page: scroll down to a table that says "Skim through". The columns on the right will quickly tell you which ingredients are known to be “icky” and irritating.

SHORT HACK, LONG LIFE

To make this practical, tonight in your bathroom, review your major cosmetics, skincare and haircare products. Use Codecheck to identify any yellow or red flags. Codecheck is known for being critical, so it will save you time on research. If you want a deeper understanding of what an ingredient does, use INCIDecoder.

As you do your research, keep the following in mind regarding product labels and ingredients:

1. Ingredients are usually listed in descending order of quantity, with the most abundant ingredient listed first (almost everywhere but for some reason not in South Korea).

2. A product's texture is typically defined by its top five ingredients.

3. Some ingredients can be harmful even in very small amounts.

ZAPIEN PROTOCOL

Anthony 🇩🇪

Workout:
I'm rather lazy, but I join my athletic girlfriend 1-2 times on the weekends. 60:40 cardio vs weights and I do like burpees and sprints. I try to add a sauna session afterwards. Daily hack: never take the elevator if you live on the 4th floor.

Nutrition & Supplements:
Like a dog, I don't really pay attention to nutrition. But unlike a pig, I don’t put on weight easily ;). I try to eat a huge variety as long as it tastes good (but never seafood). My intermittent fasting routine: During the week I don't eat breakfast (living near the office I can go from bed to desk in 30 mins) and sometimes not even lunch if I have too much work. I never skip dinner and usually eat quite late.

I don’t take supplements regularly, but occasionally use Orthomol Immun (Vitamin C, zinc…) for a boost. I've experimented with all sorts of nootropics, but nothing has really stuck with me. I try to avoid coffee for better sleep.

Sleep:
This is the most important variable in my life. I try to sleep 8-8.5 hours per night and I have different blankets for summer and winter, as well as two pillows including an ergonomic one. I swear by binaural beats for power naps. I exclusively shower in cold water, usually in the evening before going to sleep.

Mental Wellbeing:
Sleep is my most important factor for good mental health. Being stoic & always optimistic helps as well. As an extrovert I love socializing. Always try to balance yourself: nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems.

Not for the first time, longevity giant and Harvard professor David Sinclair is being criticized by other scientists for making exaggerated claims on anti-aging supplements, leading to ex-colleagues resigning from longevity academy headed by Sinclair.

Can you eat too much protein? New preliminary study suggests too much (or the wrong kind) may be a driver for cardiovascular disease.
